Atkins To Promote Nutrition In Schools
This is really frightening: Atkins are going to be advising children on what to eat!
“The National Education Association, the largest organization of educators in the United States, has announced that it’s teaming up with the fad “Atkins” diet to promote so-called “sound nutrition”.While local school districts and state legislatures are rightfully moving away from ties between commercialization and public education, the NEA has decided to “sell out” and hop into bed with the mass-marketing tactics of the dangerous fad-diet industry.
With Atkins’ new deal to underwrite the NEA’s nutrition and exercise efforts, the public can be assured that parents, kids, and teachers will be inundated with “low-carb” messages promoting meat and other fatty foods. Low-carb diets have been condemned by health organizations worldwide, including the American Heart Association, because they often lead to high cholesterol levels and other problems. The Atkins diet also undermines efforts to promote healthy, plant-based diets, which offer students sound nutrition based on meals that are low in fat and cholesterol-free.”
Look, I know that loads of people rave about the atkins diet, in fact one of my best friend swears by it. If someone wants to do the atkins diet, and they’re aware of the risks associated with that diet, then fine.
BUT to push the diet on children is going too far. To promote (directly or indirectly) a diet on a child without proper medical supervision is irresponsible. I only hope that the people at Atkins will advise the NEA responsibly and ethically…. for the children’s sake.
