Genetically Modified Food To Be Identified

Dr Joseph Mercola mentions an article he found in the New York Times

“Soon, fruits and vegetables will be labeled, not with those pesky, hard to discern paper stickers, but with lasers.

This high-tech tattooing uses lasers to imprint fruits and vegetables with names, identifying numbers, where they were grown and other information that speeds the distribution process, not unlike the radio frequency identification tags (RFID) now used by Wal-Mart.

The best advantage this new technology offers: A way to identify genetically modified produce, based on global standards established by the Produce Marketing Association and the International Federation for Produce Coding.

These organizations have established global standards for the price look-up numbers associated with all produce. How can you tell the difference?

Four-digit numbers denote conventionally grown produce.
Five digits beginning with a 9 signifies organic.
Five digits beginning with 8 means genetically modified.”

I think it’s great that we will soon be able to tell which produce has been genetically modified. I suspect that it might be more than we realise, but until then I’m going to stick with organic food!

I highly recommend Dr Mercola’s blog to anyone interested in getting an honest, down-to-earth perspective about health.
