It’s not all about the diet

“Jessy Chack wrote an article controversially titled “Ditch The South Beach Diet — Head To A Real One” It got my attention, but not for the reason you might think.

When all’s said and done, you really have a few things that nobody can take away from you, and that’s your body. The trouble is that a lot of us really don’t appreciate how precious it is. We overfeed it, starve it, abuse it, loathe it, wish it was smaller/taller/thinner/more muscular/different. But have we really stopped to appreciate what we have? I know that I haven’t. Our bodies - whatever shape they are in, are our most treasured possession. And it’s time we start treating it as such. Jessy writes:

“We need to take the spotlight away from food and diets and start talking about our bodies.

As a child, I knew I had one great possession — my body. It was slender and quick. I lived within it. I’d wake up in the morning, excited, ready to go out and look at the world. Breakfast would only slow me down. I wanted to leap to the streets outside my window as I could and see what had happened overnight.

As a teen and adult, I have met people who talk passionately about their new BMW’s. But that isn’t a real possession. As the dancer Allegra Kent says, “All we actually have is our body and its muscles that allow us to be under our own power, to glide in the water, to roll down a hill and to jump into someone’s arms.”

Get out there and be a kid again. Do something. Anything that brings you joy. I worry about people who says they have no time. Is your life really that out of control that you don’t have an extra 30 minutes a day to invest in the greatest asset you possess — your body?

And now I have a question for you: What’s the best gift you ever received? You may cherish a fancy piece of jewelry, or maybe an amazing sweater you received over the holidays. Chances are you’ve made great efforts to keep those gifts in top quality shape.

But stop and think about this — you wouldn’t have anything at all if it weren’t for your body. Your body is the most precious gift that you have ever been given, so why wouldn’t you treat it with the same loving care?”
