Weight Gain Caused By Being Office-Bound
Medicine.net reports that spending hours at your desk is likely to cause obesity. A study of 1600 full-time workers of both sex concuded that a those who sepend more than six hours a day sitting at their desk were 68% more likely to be overweight or obese. The article states:
“Being a desk jockey weighs heavily on workers, according to a study that finds the more a man sits at his desk, the more likely he is to be overweight.
The finding suggests office work may be an important factor in the obesity epidemic.
“The current findings present the sedentary workplace as a potentially hostile environment in terms of overweight and obesity,” conclude the Australian authors of the study, which appears in the August issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.”
So, what can you do about it?
Well, I’m desk-bound for most of the day and because my commute is so short, I have found that I have to work harder to keep the weight off. Here are some of the things I do:
- Walk every lunchtime for 30 minutes
- Make excuses to walk up and down the stairs
- Cut out junk food - I eat apples whenever I feel peckish
- Drink lots of water and take lots of bathroom breaks
